Hawaii, I lived there until recently.
The more the United States emphasizes the importance of diversity, the more I realize that there are just as many problems piling up. It's a country that takes diversity for granted.
When I started living in Hawaii, I realized there was truly no stress related to LGBTQ+ or racial discrimination. (I plan to write about the origins of Hawaiian culture separately. I also have a painting donated to a Hawaiian cultural village.)
Anyway, my child is what you'd call a half-Japanese, and in mainland US, there were quite a few troublesome people, which really took a toll on my mind and body. Hawaii truly lifted a weight off my shoulders. When I went to kindergarten, children with looks like my daughter's were the majority. Everyone had names like Portuguese, Korean, English, Japanese... all sorts of names. All of them were adorable children.
I drew this painting when I was living in Hawaii, and I was thinking about how difficult it must be to have gendered public restrooms? And perhaps in conjunction with LGBTQ+ issues? Hmm? Oh, I can't quite remember the reason I drew this. What was it again... Oh well. But I do remember. After I finished painting it, I burst out laughing by myself.
