I had literally no money at the time, and the place I finally found was, well, in a pretty rough neighborhood. The inside of the house was nice, though. Oh yeah, it was a 1-bedroom, 1-living-room for 650 dollars, I think.
Outside the house, gang members wearing bandanas are holding meetings, and drug deals are an everyday occurrence. And helicopters patrol almost every day. By the way, the locals called these helicopters "Ghetto Bird." What a creative name (LOL).
So, anyway, about our next-door neighbor: he was super skinny and his teeth were wrecked. Even from 100 meters away, he was the definition of a junkie, The Tweaker. He came over to say hello on the day we moved in.
"Oh, new residents? Hey there."
"Oh, hi."
"Where are you from?"
"Japan"
"Oh, cool, I have a Filipino friend."
"Huh???"
I couldn't make any sense of the conversation. Lol
And the whole time, he kept peering into our house. I knew what he was doing—he was scouting for "things to steal." Junkies don't have jobs, so they steal things, sell them, and buy meth. From that day on, I made sure to keep an eye on his behavior.
One day, he started talking to me.
"So, I sneaked into a car and tried to steal something."
"Hah?? (Seriously, what is wrong with this guy?)"
"And then..."
"So, what happened?"
"I realized something."
"I broke my own car window and tried to rob my own car."
This guy was a complete lost cause. It was THE END for him.
A few days later, there was an FBI raid,
and he vanished off somewhere.
And so on.
And they all lived happily ever after, lol.
